LGFCU Profile

Our goal is to put forth every effort to help our members become financially self-sufficient and successful. We place high importance on consumer education and the teaching of financial thrift. Unlike traditional financial institutions, LGFCU channels all profits back to the members in the form of better rates and improved services. There are no stockholders or paid board members to compensate.

Member Advocacy

Through educating members, undertaking public service initiatives and including members in the governance of LGFCU, we seek to improve social justice and quality-of-life for low- and moderate-wealth families.

Member Education

We have a variety of programs to help our members be informed consumers; in addition we are committed to educating members and potential members about credit union uniqueness, philosophy and values.

  • Free basic financial planning
  • Aim monthly financial magazine
  • In-branch reference materials
  • One-to-one presence at county/city unit-sponsored benefits/organizational fairs and training throughout the year

We have special financial education opportunities for our young members, too.

  • Youth Advisory Council - Our Generation—Speakin' Up is a group of teen members who formed to represent the youth of LGFCU by providing feedback to management on products, services and how to reach out to young people.
  • Fat Cat - Share-based account for children 12 years of age that gives them an opportunity to begin saving and learn about money.
  • Zard - Share-based account designed to give young adults from 13 to 19 years of age an understanding of managing money, credit usage and planning.
  • National Credit Union Youth Week - Every April, credit unions across the nation host events and activities for children and teenagers.

Public Service

LGFCU encourages participation and stresses the importance of being active partners in the community. We recognize that practicing good corporate and individual citizenship supports the worldwide credit union philosophy of "People Helping People."

Through both organizational and individual staff efforts, LGFCU makes direct financial support, volunteer time, and in-kind contributions to worthwhile local organizations.

Methods of LGFCU community support

By supporting our communities, we help raise the overall socio-economic well being of those in our community, help to strengthen ties within the community and better position LGFCU to serve those in the greatest need of affordable financial services.

Governance

Volunteers have historically played a very significant role in credit unions. They truly represent the philosophical character of these cooperatives that rely on members to help one another. LGFCU offers many opportunities for members to participate and provide input.

  • Statewide Advisory Councils - More than 300 volunteers are appointed by the board of directors to serve in a sounding board capacity. The volunteers are organized into 28 regional advisory councils that allow easy meeting attendance, as well as representation in the geographic areas.
  • Open Annual Meetings - Members are encouraged to attend, expected to participate, ask questions and provide feedback to the board and management during the open format meeting.
  • Board and Committee Attendance Standards - Board and committee attendance is held to the highest standards and exceeds all governance requirements.
  • Volunteer Training - LGFCU encourages, facilitates and supports credit union education, financial training and national-level government affairs conference attendance for all board members; new board members are requested to complete the Volunteer Achievement Program.
